Contact lenses for older children and teens
Some children are ready for contact lenses before high school, and some teens prefer them for sports. The doctor decides after an exam and a talk with you both.
Your contact lens prescription is yours. We give you a copy after the fitting, and you can fill it anywhere.
A contact lens exam is separate from a glasses exam
Your child learns to put in, take out and care for the lenses
A follow-up visit checks how the lenses are doing

The fitting
From first fitting to your own pair
- 01
The exam
The doctor measures the eye and checks that contact lenses suit it.
- 02
A trial pair
Your child wears a trial pair so we can see how they sit and feel.
- 03
Learning to handle them
A staff member shows your child how to put them in, take them out and keep them clean, with a parent present.
- 04
A follow-up
We check the fit again after a short time, then at each exam.
Questions about contact lenses
How old does a child need to be?
There is no set age. It depends on whether your child can handle and care for the lenses. The doctor talks it through with you both.
Can my teen wear them for sports only?
Often, yes. Tell the doctor how your teen plans to use them and the prescription is written for that.
Can I buy lenses somewhere else?
Yes. Your prescription is yours, and a copy comes with the fitting.
