Children's eye exams

A full exam looks at how well your child sees, how the eyes work together and how healthy they are. It runs about 45 minutes, and a parent stays in the room.

  • Games and pictures for the youngest children

  • Letters and lenses for school-age children

  • Drops only when the doctor explains why and you say yes

The visit

What happens at the exam

  1. Step 1: Talk first

The doctor asks what you and your child have noticed, and how your child sees at school and at home.

  2. Step 2: Measure how the eyes see

A machine and a few lenses show how clearly each eye sees and whether glasses would help.

  3. Step 3: Check how the eyes work together

Tracking, focusing and teamwork matter for reading, and we look at each.

  4. Step 4: Look at eye health

The doctor looks at the front and back of each eye with a light.

  5. Step 5: Talk it through

You leave with a plain account of the findings, and a copy of any prescription.

How often

When to book

Many eye doctors suggest these points. Your doctor sets the schedule for your child.

  • Preschool

Another around age 3, before school starts.

  • School age

Before kindergarten, then every year or two.

  • Teens

Every year or two, or sooner if the prescription is changing.
